Lincoln has been twinned with Port Lincoln in Southern Australia since 1991, this is celebrated each year both sides of the world, despite the time difference!
Matthew Flinders, born in Donington Lincolnshire named the habour he found in Australia - Port Lincoln, after his home country.
Flinders was born on 16th March 1774 and married Ann Chappelle on 17th April 1801. Soon after the wedding he set sail for Australia, leaving his wife behind. Between 1801 and 1803 he sailed around Australia, became shipwrecked on The Great Barrier Reef and was kept prisoner for six and half years. He finally made it home and had a baby daughter in 1812.
The day after he published his book, he sadly died. St Marys Church in Donington has a display dedicated to Matthew Flinders and a statue in his memory in the village.
